Soldier's Letter from the French and Indian War

The French and Indian War was fought in North America from 1754 to 1763.

Another war was being fought in Europe at the same time, but was called the Seven Years War. The main goal of the British was to drive the French from their positions in North America. The population of French settlers at this time was 60,000 residents, while the British colonies held a populations of 2 million. Much of the fighting took place between the British and French, with their Indian allies in the frontier regions of Pennsylvania, and New York. As a result of the war, the British took control of Canada, and France ceded the territory east of the Mississippi River to the British.

Offered here is an original 1758 letter written by a soldier in the French and Indian War from Flatbush, New York. The letter is datelined Flat Bush 6 miles above Albany, and is dated Flatbush June 10, 1758. The letter was written by Samuel Garfield to his wife Abigail Garfield, in Spencer, Massachusetts, to the care of Mr. David Linds.

In part he writes “We are now arrived at Hudson River, and has had a tedious march through the woods. We expect to march from this place in a short time and our friends and neighbors are well at present. I have nothing remarkable to tell you at this time.”

Very nice example of a soldier's letter written during the French and Indian War.
